City of Ryde Tree Rules & Regulations

Tree and vegetation management within the City of Ryde is governed by DCP 2014 Part 9.5 – Tree and Vegetation Preservation, prepared in accordance with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Biodiversity and Conservation) 2021.

Most pruning or removal of prescribed vegetation requires Council approval unless a recognised exemption applies. Development affecting existing trees commonly requires an AQF Level 5 Arborist Report prepared in accordance with AS 4970:2025.

  • Most development affecting existing trees requires an Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA), TPZ and SRZ calculations, Tree Protection Plans and, where required, Project Arborist inspections.
  • Council provides several exemptions, including certain small trees, limited pruning, specific exempt species and trees confirmed by Council as dead or posing an unacceptable risk, subject to the requirements outlined in the DCP.
  • Exempt species include Camphor Laurel (under 10 metres), Cocos Palm, Coral Tree, Privet, African Olive, Poplar, Willow and Rhus Tree.
  • Heritage controls, biodiversity legislation, Significant Trees and Development Consent conditions may override otherwise applicable exemptions.
  • Replacement planting may be required as a condition of approval, generally at a ratio of 3:1 using advanced stock.
  • We assess the relevant Council requirements for your property, determine whether approval is required and prepare the documentation needed to support your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my tree exempt from Council approval?

The City of Ryde identifies several exempt tree species, including Camphor Laurel (under 10 metres), Cocos Palm, Coral Tree, Privet, African Olive, Poplar, Willow and Rhus Tree, together with certain dead, dying or hazardous trees, subject to Council requirements. We can determine whether an exemption applies before any work begins.

Do I need Council approval to remove a tree?

In most cases, yes. The City of Ryde declares all vegetation to be prescribed vegetation, meaning a Tree Management Application, Development Application or written confirmation of exemption is generally required before a tree is pruned or removed unless a recognised exemption applies.

What does an Arborist Report include?

Depending on the purpose of the report, it may include a tree health and structural assessment, Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) and Structural Root Zone (SRZ) calculations, retention recommendations, impact assessment and tree protection measures prepared in accordance with current Australian Standards.

How soon can you attend for an urgent assessment?

Fast-track reporting is available for urgent and hazardous tree assessments, subject to current availability.

Do you prepare reports for builders, architects and developers?

Yes. We prepare DA Arborist Reports during the design stage, Tree Protection Plans following Development Consent and provide Project Arborist inspections throughout demolition and construction for residential and commercial developments across the City of Ryde.
