Which Arborist Report Do You Need?

The City of Canada Bay combines major redevelopment corridors around Rhodes and Concord West with established residential streets, character homes and waterfront properties along the Parramatta River foreshore. This mix of apartment construction, renovation activity and mature tree canopy means Arborist Reports are commonly required to support Development Applications, tree removal approvals and construction compliance across the local government area.

Canada Bay Council Tree Rules & Guidelines

Before pruning or removing a tree within the City of Canada Bay, it is important to understand Council's tree preservation requirements.

Arbor Express prepares AQF Level 5 Arborist Reports that help homeowners, builders, architects and developers satisfy Canada Bay Council's planning requirements.

  • Council approval is generally required before pruning or removing protected trees, including trees 5 metres or taller, heritage trees and trees protected under the City of Canada Bay Development Control Plan.
  • Properties that are Heritage Items or located within Heritage Conservation Areas generally require Development Consent, rather than a standard Tree Permit, before tree removal or major pruning.
  • Common permit exemptions include trees that are not protected, removal of dead branches that provide no habitat value, declared priority weed species, pruning of up to 10% of the canopy within a calendar year by an AQF Level 3 or higher arborist in accordance with AS 4373, and permitted pruning of branches overhanging neighbouring properties.
  • Where proposed building works may affect retained trees, Council may require an Arborist Report addressing Tree Protection Zones (TPZ), construction impacts, tree retention feasibility and tree protection measures as part of the Development Application.
  • We assess your site, explain Council requirements and prepare the appropriate Arborist Report before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Council approval to prune or remove a tree?

In most situations, yes. A Council permit is generally required to prune or remove a protected tree under the City of Canada Bay Development Control Plan unless the proposed work falls within a recognised exemption. We can confirm whether your tree is protected before work begins.

Is my tree exempt from Council approval?

A permit is generally not required for trees that are not protected, removal of dead branches without habitat value, declared priority weed species or pruning of up to 10% of the canopy within a calendar year carried out by an AQF Level 3 or higher arborist in accordance with AS 4373. We can confirm whether your tree qualifies.

Does heritage listing affect tree removal in Canada Bay?

Yes. If your property is a Heritage Item or located within a Heritage Conservation Area, a standard Tree Permit is generally not sufficient. Tree pruning or removal usually requires Development Consent.

What does an Arborist Report include?

Depending on the purpose of the report, it may include a tree health and structural assessment, Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) and Structural Root Zone (SRZ) calculations, retention recommendations and protection measures tailored to support a Development Application, tree removal application or Health & Safety assessment.

How soon can you attend for an urgent assessment?

Fast-track reporting is available for urgent and hazardous tree assessments, subject to current availability.

Do you prepare reports for builders, architects and developers?

Yes. We prepare DA Arborist Reports during the design stage, Tree Protection Plans following approval and provide Project Arborist inspections throughout construction for residential and commercial developments across Canada Bay Council.
